Media layoffs: Questions linger

It was not Anoop Kumar’s time to die. He was young and dynamic and hopeful like we all are when building a life in journalism. So when the news came that the ever smiling Anoop Kumar was no more, it hit me like a tornado. He died of cardiac arrest while vacationing in Manali. Hours before passing on, he was caught on smart phone dancing with his family, ushering in the New Year.

Today when Press Club of India, Indian Women’s Press Corps, Press Association and Indian Journalists Union came together to discuss “Issues arising from mass layoffs in media” at PCI lawns in New Delhi, my heart went out to Anoop, who is survived by a young wife and a son.

Anoop had been laid off by Times Now some years ago. He had not found a job. Though very well connected, especially in South India, which he covered as a political correspondent, Anoop never curried favours with politicians for a job. His friends say, “he was not the types”.

It was a shock when we learnt at the condolence meeting for Anoop Kumar on January 5 that he had been suffering from a heart ailment and doctors had advised him a procedure. It got us thinking if lack of money kept him from undergoing a life saving surgery and if we could have saved him had we known. Clearly, we were not talking to his enough.

Questions linger. They will always linger. And there will never be easy answers, like there were none today when senior journalists speaking at Press Club asked, “Where is NDTV’s Prannoy Roy?”

Since today’s event came close on the heels of NDTV sacking around 200 staffers citing “business decisions”, it was natural for speakers to expect answers from owners Prannoy and Radhika Roy.

After all these speakers and almost the entire Delhi media was there when press organizations came together to back the Roys after ED raids on their properties.

Top journalists had attended that meet in solidarity with NDTV. There were representatives from the Editors Guild of India. There was Barkha Dutt. There was Nidhi Razdan. There was Rajdeep Sardesai. There was Soli Sorabjee. There was Arun Shourie. Name a famous media person and he/she was there as they should have been.

But today’s visitation was not even a pale shadow of the one PCI witnessed for the Roys. This left many a heart broken because expectations were high. When the ED raided the Roys, everyone sent out a strong message from PCI: “Assault on media freedom won’t be tolerated”. But when layoffs happened at NDVT, and earlier at Telegraph and also Hindustan Times, we did not even hear whimpers.

Understandably, veteran journalist Urmilesh today said he was shocked to hear NDTV sacking so many staffers as he considered NDTV a “better among worse channels”. He asked why Prannoy Roy was absent today.

“Prannoy Roy should have come. He could have spoken about his limitations. We know the pressures NDTV is in. We wanted to hear him. He could have told us what happened. Further, I feel a channel like NDTV should have set an example in India by getting top paid professionals to get salary cuts to prevent retrenchment. People earning Rs 10 to 30 lakh a month could have taken cuts to enable redistribution of salaries and avert retrenchment,” Urmilesh said.

Hartosh Singh Bal, who is fighting a court case after being sacked by Open magazine five years ago, also spoke of the absence of Prannoy Roy while urging journalists to use the Working Journalists’ Act in defence of lay offs.

“They were there when it suited them. But they are not here today. We were told if both husband and wife were working at NDTV, NDTV sacked one of the spouses. So far as I know Prannoy and Radhika Roy continue to work together at NDTV,” Bal noted advising the extension of Working Journalists Act to cover television media.

All kinds of responses came with journalist Pankaj Srivastav describing himself as a “another barkhast journalist” (sacked journalist). Srivastav recalled the huge gathering at the same venue when the Roys of NDTV were in trouble and lamented lack of media layoffs being a priority. He spoke of individual struggle after being retrenched and of how he had sustained.

Suggestions poured as the evening chill caught up forcing people to catch tea cups at Press Club lawns. But everyone in the assembly knew the relief from warmed tea was temporary as a bigger chill gathered around the world of media.

Press Association President Jai Shankar Gupta made this shocking revelation. “The Government has sent us a notice for eviction from National Media Centre.”

By the end of the evening, one thing was clear: “Everyone was fighting their own battles.”

The need perhaps is for meaningful media solidarity and that’s also the only answer. We can keep coming together as associations, sharing woes, making ourselves heard. But until we come together as human beings first, nothing will change.

We must petition the Government, must engage managements and must file court cases. The fight for justice must go on and it will. But while it does, let’s make sure another Anoop Kumar does not happen.

Our first challenge is to be friends to one another; talk more to each other; know more about each other. We can’t leave this to press organizations. This is for us to do.

Let’s start by asking: “Is Anoop Kumar’s family coping well or do they need my help?”
